This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ronnie Bottomley Trio @ The Railway, Stockport - Oct. 19

 Ronnie Bottomley (drums); Jason Scott (piano); Adrian Knowles (bass).

Based in Wakefield, Ronnie Bottomley has been involved in the music business for over sixty years working in the UK and abroad as a drummer or MD for countless artists in theatres, night clubs and jazz venues. He is also well known for leading an excellent eighteen piece big band which contains some of the Norths’ finest musicians.


A total of fifteen tunes were played tonight. A mixture of standards and show tunes plus one Monk number - In Walked Bud, Unusually, no Ellingtonia. 


Pianist Jason Scott, although he brought with him a keyboard, he decided to use the house upright, a good move in my opinion. He has a percussive touch and evokes memories of Shearing and Brubeck. 


Knowles, on bass, gets a nice sound and his solos were interesting. I liked what he did on the theme of Bye Bye Blackbird.  


Regarding Ronnie Bottomley, he drove things along just nicely and I hope the long journey to the gig hasn’t put him off making a return visit.

The next jazz night at the Railway is the Bim Williams Trio on Oct. 24
