Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Steve Pimlott @ The Tallyrand, Manchester - July 29

(Steve & Uli @ the Railway 2014)
Steve Pimlott (tenor sax); Uli Elbracht (guitar); John Sandham (double bass); Erryl Roberts (drums).

The Tallyrand, a small narrow pub located at 1030 Stockport Road, Levenshulme, Manchester M19 3WX, is named after a French diplomat who came to Levenshulme in 1793 to avoid execution. It puts on a mixture of cultural events including plays, films, blues and tonight hosted the modern jazz of the Steve Pimlott Quartet.

Erryl Roberts replaced Phil Bennett who had been pinged and was self-isolating and a young tenor player called Barney sat in on Tenor Madness. He had a nice Dexter Gordon sound and it’s great to see more young people are getting into jazz. I must also mention the fine solos from guitarist Uli Elbracht - well known for his work with the Magic Beans and his teaching at Leeds Conservatoire.

The Tallyrand has a bandstand at the end of the room and an excellent sound system which gave Steve’s tenor sax an edgier tone than usual with a slight echo. This is one of the best venues for live jazz that I have come across and the subdued lighting with candles on the tables gave it a cool Bohemian atmosphere. It actually reminds me of the Uptown Jazz Cafe - a jazz club in Melbourne - which is still going strong.

This Sunday, August 1, Steve’s Quartet will be at the Railway Stockport which will include the fantastic pianist Richard Weatherall. Mike Farmer

Blues for Alice; When; By Now; Lux Sonique; On Green Dolphin Street; Close Your Eyes; Giant Steps; 34 Years and Counting; Tenor Madness; Laura; Take That as a No; My Foolish Heart; St Thomas.
