This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. KSTV: Ellington's Unknown Session - May 29

This one had 'all-star' written all over it. All-star on the 1960 Ellington 'Unknown Session' album, all-star here at Kansas Smitty's, fully six decades on. Giacomo Smith put together this evening's set list, playing something like eight of the twelve numbers from the original recording plus a good old good one. 

The horns - Smith, alto sax, an inspired Pete Horsfall, trumpet, adopting the role of Ray Nance, young gun Dan Higham doing Lawrence Brown proud, and carrying the heavy plumbing, Mr Alex Garnett of the Parish of 47 Fleet Street - produced one fine solo after another, smiles all round. As for the rhythm section, well, there ain't none better - Joe Webb, surely as good as any pianist on the scene, Ferg Ireland, bass (the boys in the band set their watches to his time keeping) and drummer Shane Forbes smiling non-stop, swinging away like Sam Woodyard. 

The youngest member of the ensemble, Dan Higham, contributed several fine solos and transcribed a couple of charts - Mighty Like the Blues and Don't You Know I Care (or Don't You Care to Know). It's odds on the fine trombonist will soon find himself in the enviable position of picking and choosing his gigs!

Ferg Ireland's playing on Mood Indigo garnered plaudits from his band mates - Yeah, Ferg, and it was on the closing number - Things Ain't What They Used to be - when Smith (Johnny Hodges) showed what he could do. It had been another great session here at Kansas Smitty's. Russell
