Adrian Cox plays King Oliver - May 30

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

Preacher Cox expressed his thanks for so many parishioners logging on when they could have skipped today's Sunday Service in favour of a trip to the seaside or where ever. Our man is once again out in Bulgaria but that doesn't stop him playing his weekly Facebook gig. Today's subject King Oliver, tunes composed by the man and others, including Fats Waller. Snake Rag for openers, Cox as casually fluent as ever. Our man referred to his notes to impart some facts about Joe 'King' Oliver - his days in New Orleans, moving on to Chicago and employing Louis Armstrong as second cornet.

The Mississippi Sheiks' Sitting on Top of the World (circa 1930) (later to find wider popularity thanks to Howlin' Wolf and Cream) featured Adrian's vocals, snapping fingers and languid, bluesy clarinet playing. Apropos of nothing, Adrian recounted the meeting of his dog - Rocky - and his partner's mother's dog (a poodle). At their first meeting, Rocky almost killed the poodle. Strangely, they haven't met since...

To end this week's sermon, Adrian thanked his Bulgarian host, plugged some of this week's live streams (including Joe Webb's Saturday afternoon session) and went out on, altogether now...Hello, Central, get me Doctor JazzRussell
