Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Ojoyo - Ojoyo Plays Safrojazz

Yesterday Hebburn Town won the FA Vase, so it seemed like more than coincidence that the opening track on this album, which arrived today, should be called Station Road Strut - Station Road being one of the main streets in Hebburn. That this particular Station Road is actually in Cape Town and was originally recorded in 1996 doesn't make it any less of a coincidence!

The title, Safrojazz gives a fair indication of what it's all about - Township jazz, merged with its American counterpart, at its best. South African born Goldberg, in fact, had a long association with the legendary Hugh Masekela and he shines, not only on alto but on penny whistle. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't play jazz on a whistle - just let them listen to Goldberg.

Chris Botti too is a revelation. Not the cool, easy listening, player he's often pigeonholed as but a fiery trumpet player who you wouldn't want to lock horns with on a jam session. Likewise Tenconi who blows some searing tenor on Sophiatown Society.

It's an album that's ideal for listening or dancing. Such hypnotic rhythms that I found it difficult to keep still - I guarantee you too will be shaking your booty!

As an aside from shaking my booty to this, I’d also like to say how interesting the cover artwork is!

As a penny whistle player, I've always contended that you can play jazz on it. I may even turn up at a jam session with my whistle, when venues open again! Just don't encourage me, or I might even bring the bodhran and ukulele as well!
