Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Peter Morgan Live streaming from the Globe - Feb.14

Peter Morgan (piano); Vilda Kuby (bass); Paul Campbell (drums).

I viewed this one cautiously, leaving the back door open in case I opted for a quick departure. I only knew Morgan as the bass trombone player who leads the Customs House Big Band. As a pianist he was an unknown quantity.

As it turned out my misgivings were unfounded and, accompanied by two musicians whose names were only vaguely familiar to me, played a delightful one hour set.

This wasn't a boundary busting cross genre session but one that reflected the mood of St. Valentine's Day and I could imagine lovers gazing into each other's eyes as he played: There Will Never be Another you; Black Orpheus; My One and Only Love; Desperado (with a touch of the St. Louis Blues); Witchcraft; The Nearness of You; Cute; Bésame Mucho (with the obligatory hint of My Funny Valentine in the intro); I Remember Clifford; Yardbird Suite and a number from 1959 that he said we will all know and maybe I did - was it All Blues?

Some fine piano playing with sympathetic drums and bass. Once again The Globe has pulled a rabbit out of the hat and I look forward to actually hearing the trio again at a real live gig.

A thought crossed my mind ... Why doesn't Sunderland based Peter feature himself on a number with the big band when such things are allowed? He could call it The Kid From Red House*
