Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Joe Farnsworth Trio live streaming from Mezzrow's, NYC - Feb. 27

Kenny Barron (piano); Peter Washington (double bass); Joe Farnsworth (drums)

A first virtual visit for BSH to Mezzrow's, NYC. The Greenwich Village partner venue to Small's is next door on West 10th Street and by the look of things it's smaller than Small's, and that's saying something! Witchcraft opened the show. Swinging, relaxed as you like, bassist Peter Washington the first in the soloist's spotlight, fours with Farnsworth following on, Barron the man! The decor, stripped back to the brick, portraits of Mezz Mezzrow and...is that James P Johnson? Answers/corrections to the Editor, BSH.

Straight on, no time for small talk, Barron and co swinging the 'what's its' off Billie's Bounce (Washington again defining the art of the tasteful solo). Time for a ballad, The Very Thought of You, sheer class. Joe Farnsworth squeezed out from behind his kit to address the online audience (a global audience!) as Mezzrow's was without a real live audience, thanking 'Mr Barron' for being on the gig! I Thought About You with 'Mr Barron' at Mezzrow's Steinway, once again in full flow.

Monk the penultimate selection, Farnsworth's military medium fours topped off with a wonderful double-time flourish. To close the set, Farnsworth revealed he has the occasional text exchange with Peter Washington. One such recent exchange read: KB + Monk = heaven. And with that our bandleader insisted Mezzrow's Spike Wilner should come to the mic to say a few words. With daughter Lulu in his arms, Wilner simply thanked the musicians and left the stage to them. The Joe Farnsworth Trio signed off with My Funny Valentine or so we thought. They were enjoying themselves so much they went out on a swift Surrey with the Fringe on Top. The concert was part of the UCF (University of Central Florida) Orlando Jazz Festival. A hugely enjoyable set.
