This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Frank Lacy's Tromboniverse live streamimg from Small's, NYC - Feb. 16

Frank Lacy's Tromboniverse is an amazing spectacle. Eight, possibly nine, trombonists blowing in Small's bijou space is quite something. Oh, to have been there! In a one hour set of of orginal compositions and a couple of standards, Lacy's 'bone men and women were augmented by piano, bass and drums. 

For much of the hour Lacy stood to one side of the stage, out of shot. Rashaan Salaam acting as Lacy's assistant, directed the ensemble with some vigour. An arrangement of Stevie Wonder's Too High received its premiere, and the one ballad of the evening, JJ Johnson's Lament, revealed the many colours in the trombonists' gig bag. 

Frank Lacy is a long-serving member of the Mingus Big Band. Tromboniverse is his own project. If the opportunity arises to hear either band, take it.

Russell you have reminded me of the occasion during the London jazz festival about 2010 when I saw a Japanese band comprising a line of 10 Baritone Saxes on their own playing arrangements using all the band. They were giving a taster of their gig being held that evening. Fascinating is an understatement apart from the music being really brilliant. I think the venue I was at was in Foyles ??? book shop.
Hope you are coping well with the lockdown Russell ,cant wait till we can all meet up again at a live gig.

Ron, there is a gig list as long as your vaccinated arm just waiting for the green light! I'll see you at many of them, that's for certain.
