This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Book review: Jeff Gold - Sittin' In: Jazz Clubs of the 1940s and 1950s

Jeff Gold's new book Sittin' In is a treasure trove of rare material discovered in a jazz collector's safe-deposit boxes. In his introduction Gold reveals that after spending some four hours in a bank vault looking through countless items he concluded:  If I hadn't seen pictures like these, I doubted many others had, adding: I bought all of them.   

The material - concert tickets, handbills, autographs, contracts and letters - was amassed during the 1940s and 1950s and Gold presents it across some 255 pages in three parts: Part One: The East Coast, Part Two: The Midwest, Part Three: The West Coast. A handbill from NYC's 'Harlem's High Spot Apollo' (see photo) gives an indication of the legendary names appearing week after week - Ethel Waters, Dizzy, Illinois Jacquet.
Chicago features in the Midwest section; the New Club DeLisa proclaiming itself to be The Harlem of Chicago. Interestingly, Breakfast Dance Every Monday Morning appears to have been an attraction (see photo)! And from 1945 Los Angeles (Part Three), a photo folder and souvenir photograph from 4201 So. Central Ave - aka The Downbeat. The Harper Design 'coffee table' format hardback book is profusely illustrated and, in addition to Gold's observations, there are interviews with Quincy Jones and Sonny Rollins alongside contributions from Jason Moran and Dan Morgenstern.
