An engaging album led by Brooklyn based sax player Parker, a musician and composer whose playing since graduating from Oberlin in 2008 has taken him to festivals in China and Hong Kong including gigs with the legendary Dee-Dee Bridgewater.
The Remainder features a tight group of musicians working out on Parker's originals. Vibes, guitar, bass and drums solo fluently often intertwining with each other and, of course, the leader's alto sax. He's fiery and yet cool with it. The bite is there but he doesn't allow it to distort the tonal qualities of the instrument unleashing breathtaking wizardry as he races through the changes like the driver of a getaway car outrunning the law.
Barrick's vibes have today's sound without losing the feeling of past masters such as Jackson and Gibbs. Likewise Light has no need for exaggerated effects or Marshall stacks - he makes every note count. Seppa is sound throughout, his solo on Honeycomb a template for bass players. Berhanu kicks things along à la Elvin and Tony and the end result makes for a good start to the new year (The Remainder is released by One Trick Dog Records on January 1, 2021).
