Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Van the Man (at 75) and Paul Moran

Late Sunday evening two BBC 4 programmes about Van Morrison caught the eye. The first, - Van Morrison: Up on Cypress Avenue  - was a repeat showing of an in concert performance in 2015 to celebrate Van's 70th birthday. It was a sunny August day in Van's home town of Belfast as he played to a sell out crowd on Cypress Avenue, a location made famous thanks to the Irishman's album Astral Weeks

Van the Man dipped into his vast back catalogue to entertain those lucky enough to have bagged a ticket (they sold out in minutes of going on sale). As ever, Van played a number of rhythm and blues-inspired classics, in doing so acknowledging his debt to, and love of, black American musicians and their music. The man's ace band included his long time MD, Mr Paul Moran.

Regular readers of BSH will be well aware that Paul hails from South Tyneside. It must be quite the life touring the world with one of the enduring figures in popular music. And, if you would like to catch up with Van, Paul and the guys, they'll be rocking up at Gosforth Park on Thursday evening at the Virgin Money Unity Arena. Please note - an extensive list of Covid-secure terms and conditions can be found on the event organiser's website. Please read before booking! See www.virginmoneyunityarena.com

Following the in concert programme the Beeb screened an hour's worth of Van at the BBC including footage from Bob Harris-era Old Grey Whistle Test, numerous appearances on Jools Holland's long-running series, a session with Lonnie Donegan and an all-star set at the 1995 Mercury Music Prize shindig with the likes of Guy Barker, Georgie Fame and Alec Dankworth having a ball. Today (August 31) is Van Morrison's birthday, seventy five years young. Happy birthday, Van!
