This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Recreating the Jazz Couriers - Livestream. August 3

This looked to be the best stream so far in a year that has seen music transcending time zones and delivering live sessions that may never be heard again. Imagine John Hammond, back in the 1930's, listening on his car radio to a remote broadcast from a club in Kansas City by the fledgling Basie Band. The reception wouldn't have been good but good enough for Hammond to recognise what he was hearing.

Tonight, I was listening to the above musicians paying tribute to The Jazz Couriers and they blew up a storm at Ronnie's just as the originals did in the old days back at the Flamingo Club.

I felt like Hammond must have felt listening to the Basie Band and, without the atmospherics!

True the atmospherics were gone but not, alas, the vagaries of Facebook! Although it was relatively well behaved, it was far from perfect, stopping and starting at the most inopportune moments.

But, with the patience of Job, I hung on in for what was a cracking session.

The two tenors were brilliant. I've always related Pete Long to
the clarinet but his tenor playing appeared to have turned Simon's hair grey!

It didn't matter, the two were well matched and when it came to standing toe to toe no quarter was asked nor given.

Yes, the Jazz Couriers rode again even if it was only for one night. James Pearson, Thornton and Richardson were the perfect rhythm section and together the storm was well and truly blown up.
