Jazz Coop Livestream: Liane Carroll - June 14

Liane Carroll (vocals, keyboard)

Yes, the singing and playing was enjoyable, but what made this event really good for me was Liane's lovely personality, friendly, chatty and approachable, if you can say that about an online performance. Many others enjoyed the evening too, 66 were waiting on YouTube before the start and the comments box displayed people's eagerness. Numbers built up to 102 maximum, so imagine the Jazz Coop trying to fit all those into the Globe!

Liane treated us to no less than 11 songs in the hour, plus a medley and an encore, along with anecdotes about her life and comments about the songs. And of course her skilled keys playing was full of enthusiasm and aplomb. No messing around and time-wasting, so I'd better do the same, and simply list the set.

Almost Like Being In Love: the second chorus was sung as scat with no accompaniment, clever stuff, a very lively version.

You Don't Know Me: a very impassioned second chorus on this one

Bring Me Sunshine: from the Seaside album, reminding Liane of happy childhood memories of watching comedy on TV

Autumn Leaves; Falling In Love With Love and St Louis Blues (as per Bessie Smith)

My Baby Just Cares For Me (with the well-known Nina Simone piano intro and outro) which morphed into Sinner Man

Here's To Life; I Get Along Without You Very Well - two ballads sung with feeling, and connected with her mother as she was dying

Untitled, I think Liane forgot to tell us, but something about walking through raindrops,
No Moon At All done as a tango, great fun

Ever Since I Put Your Picture in a Frame (Tom Waits)

The medley included Liane's own song Dublin Morning; Suzanne (Leonard Cohen); Summertime (sung to a tinkling piano that even Lance would have enjoyed); My Favorite Things and also a song about dying which was cheery, which morphed into something lively about California Shoeshine Boys (Laura Nyo), which sounded like fun.

The evening was beautifully rounded off with a song for Black Lives Matter, Harvest For The World. Then Liane wished us 'Peace and Love' and was then, unfortunately, gone.

Soon to return I hope, sometime, some place.
Ann Alex
