This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Book Review: Charlotte Carter - Rhode Island Red

First published in 1997 it may seem a bit late to draw attention to this little gem now - 23 years later! However, as recently as May 17 the i newspaper included it in an article headed "25 crime novels you might not have read" and, out of the 25, this looked to be the one for me.

Rhode Island Red is the first in a trilogy featuring Nanette Hayes, a tenor sax playing, feisty female busking on the streets of Manhattan who knows her jazz and gets involved in a series of killings. Along the way she meets up with other musicians, has brushes with the cops, one of which is briefly good and another which is very bad - well it is America.


She knows her jazz - each chapter is named after a Monk tune - and references to Bird, Trane, Jug and Sonny, among others, pepper the pages. Indeed, Charlie Parker's music is endemic to the story which flows along at a pace akin to a medium tempo bebop tune with Nanette taking the discovery of bodies and lost lovers in her stride.

I don't know if the pocket-sized paperback is still available, I got mine second hand on Amazon, but I'm sure that if and when the major bookstores re-open they will advise. In the meantime, I'm in the hunt for her two follow-ups: Coq Au Vin and Drumsticks published by Mysterious Press.
