The Connection, Jack Gelber's 1959 play about drug addicts awaiting the arrival of The Dealer used musicians as part of the cast including pianist Redd, who composed the music, and McLean, whose searing alto perfectly captured the scene - and so it should - he'd been there, got the needle tracks and knew the score (and how to score)!
There have been innumerable Parker disciples and McLean rates alongside any of them, and above most.
Redd's compositions are great and his piano playing isn't bad either. I often wonder why he didn't achieve greater fame.
The rhythm section do the job without going over the top - they were also in the cast. But McLean is absolutely superb irrespective of the context.
I once had another recording of The Connection by a group that included Cecil Payne on baritone and Clark Terry on trumpet, with the great Charlie Persip on drums. The music on that one was good too but, somewhere along the way, I lost it. If I ever do become reacquainted with the LP it will be interesting to compare the two versions. Going on memory, I think this one just has the edge.
