This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Streaming Tomasso, Oliver 'n' Louis - April 17

It's Friday again and this week it's Rico Tomasso playing more Louis, today in the company of the man from Portland, Oregon, currently in Lockdown London, Mr Andrew Oliver. Convivial chat from Armstrong devotee Tomasso with some first rate trumpet playing a la Louis, pianist Oliver departing from his Jelly Roll specialism to adopt the role of Earl Hines, the half hour live stream flew by. 


Three numbers plus an insightful gem as told to Rico by Bob Wilber, tonight's session was oiled by another bottle of Old Speckled Hen and was that a bottle of Old Peculier in reserve? Rico mentioned he lived near to Fuller's Brewery, by coincidence your reviewer was supping a bottle of Fuller's 1845. Once in a While fom the 1926 studio date, Rico waiting for Andrew's recorded piano accompaniment to kick in, our man was beginning to get the hang of this live stream business. 

Perdido St Blues, a glug from the Speckled Hen then a marvellous story about Rico sharing a table listening to Bob Wilber tell a true story. Sidney Bechet went missing hours before Armstrong's '47 Town Hall concert. Wilber was there, at the time he was staying with Bechet, he was asked to stand in, he declined the invitation thinking this was too big a gig for him! What Rico didn't tell us, perhaps Wilber didn't tell Rico, was did he, Wilber, live to regret passing up the opportunity?

By popular request - lots of people have been watching the live streams - Rico and Andrew closed with Weather Bird. And that was it, at least from Andrew Oliver (he'll be back again at seven o'clock Saturday), although Rico Tomasso went out on a trumpet and vocal take on What a Wonderful World. Our host noted that Louis never played a trumpet part, he always sang the number. Your reviewer had never considered this. Yes, Rico was right, unless readers can prove him wrong.
