This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Joy Askew Live Stream - April 18

I made an abortive attempt to watch this on Facebook last night but, as so often seems to happen when I watch a streaming session on F/b the picture stops and starts and freezes and does handstands and all sorts of strange things so, in the end I gave up.

However, acting upon the advice of Richard Grainger, I put a shilling in the meter, and this morning everything dans le jardin was lovely - merci beaucoup monsieur and I was able to watch without the frustration of the previous evening.


I remember Joy well from way back when, like the aforementioned Richard, I worked in J.G. Windows music store in Newcastle where she was a regular customer. Joy was often heard singing and playing (saxophone and piano) on the local scene. One memorable evening was seeing her as singer, pianist and MD in a stage production of Willy Russell's John, Paul, George, Ringo and Bert. This would be in the late '70s.

Since then she has moved via London to New York, arriving there in 1982 and going on to greater things.

On last night's show, streamed from her NYC apartment, she sang, in her distinctive voice, seven original songs all with meaningful lyrics and delicate piano accompaniment.
