This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Just Friends @ Dormans Jazz Club, Middlesbrough - January 9

A pleasing start to the first Jazz night of the new year  was made by the guest band Just Friends led by Ian Bosworth playing popular standards to a good sized audience.

Stanley Turrentine's Sugar showed the attentive listeners that this was a tight band with great soloists.

After Out Of Nowhere, a favourite ballad of mine, Since I Fell For You had a relaxed feel and included a nice guitar solo from Ian.

By contrast the next number, a fine swinging version of There Will Never Be Another You, with solos all round, was then followed by the ever popular Misty, featuring Josh on alto sax, ably assisted by Dave on keys.

The first set closed with an up tempo version of Have You Met Miss Jones?, again with fine  solos all round.

The second set started in style with Nat Adderley's Work Song before the rhythm to Blue Bossa was set up by Mark on drums and Alan on bass with a fine solo from Josh, this time on tenor.

Blue Monk gave the musicians plenty of scope for some well improvised solos before finishing the second set with Take the A Train. 

However, after a request from the audience for an encore, Georgia On My Mind, featuring Josh on alto, eventually brought things to an enjoyable close.

This was an excellent start to the 2020 Jazz nights and a nice treat for an enthusiastic audience.
