(Review by Lance)
For those drummers who read - I'm talking words as well as music - then
Hudson Music is the place to be. They have an incredible range of drum tutors both in book form as well as on CD and DVD along with instructional items for other instruments.
As well as the educational stuff they also have a couple of biographical (one autobiographical) books. Both books, in their own way, will help the novice to find direction and the experienced pro to, maybe, relate to the lives of the drummers in question - Buddy Rich and Bobby Morris - maybe ...
I reviewed the Buddy book -
One of a Kind - earlier this month and, reading Bobby Morris'
My Las Vegas, I found that he too has had an amazing career and is highly regarded world wide. Along the way he had 5 wives, played in various Louis Prima and Keely Smith bands, was MD for Elvis and head of entertainment at most of the hotels in Vegas. Bobby Morris was the drummer in Benny Carter's band on the night that Wardell Gray died in mysterious circumstances.
Buddy Rich, who didn't read music, would hire another drummer to play on a new chart so he could get the hang of it. He usually got it in one! Bobby was that 'guinea pig'.
The names abound: Sinatra, Eddie Fisher, Garland, Streisand and many more all with stories to tell - Bobby Morris, now 92, hasn't done bad for a Polish immigrant!
