Community Radio Waves! The Makar, Power Commandos, Darlington NOJB & Clifford Brown

(The Russell Report)

At five o'clock today (Saturday, Jan 25) the first of several radio programmes to be broadcast over the next seven days should be of interest to jazz fans. J to Z on BBC Radio 3 includes a performance by Calum Gourlay's quartet. At midnight, also on Radio 3, Corey Mwamba's Freeness features the music of Taupe, Tyneside's self-styled 'power-jazz commandos'. Tomorrow (Sunday) James Morrison presents the final part of his Radio 2 series Top Brass (9:00pm) which includes music from Louis Armstrong and Brass Funkeys (heard recently in Newcastle) followed at 10:00pm by The Swing and Big Band Show with Clare Teal.

Monday to Friday Riot Girls: Trumpet (Radio 4 10:45am, repeated 7:45pm) is a five part adaptation of Jackie Kay's novel about fictional, celebrated trumpeter Joss Moody set to the music of Clifford Brown. Kay is professor of creative writing at Newcastle University and Scotland's Makar (national poet laureate). Insomniacs could tune to BBC 6 Music at 2:00am (the early hours of Tuesday) for the first part (1/4) of Robert Elms' documentary series (first broadcast in 2004) looking at the history of the The 100 Club. Part 2 (Wednesday, 2:00am) focuses on the trad jazz boom.

Two editions of next week's In Tune (Radio 3, 5:00pm) feature jazz - American and British. On Wednesday (Jan 29) American pop star turned jazz vocalist Curtis Stigers is one of Katie Derham's studio guests. On Friday the twentieth anniversary of the BBC's New Generation Artists scheme is celebrated by young British guitarist Rob Luft in a set with his quintet.

Last, but by no means least, be sure to tune to community radio station Aycliffe Radio (www.ayclifferadio.co.uk) at 6:00pm on Sunday to listen to Mike Dixon's new Jazz Time programme. Tomorrow's guest will be Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club's Ray Sams
