This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Ed Jones - For Your Ears Only

Ed Jones first appeared on my radar with Killer Shrimp at the Corner House in May 2008. This was one of the earlier postings on BSH (Yes we're 10 years old this year - we should have a party!) and Jones, I quote, "Swung his ass off". He also played a significant part with Incognito for a number years (Incognito are back at Hoochie on Friday, January 19) and, on this album, his talents are, unlike some of his progressions, far from diminished.
Wayne Shorter is ever an inspiration but perhaps Brian Blain summed Ed Jones up to perfection when, on LondonJazzNews (one of the newer fellows), he posted '...all the swagger and sound of Rollins in his prime'.
Most of the compositions are by Jones. Vosloo has one and Beraha combines with Jones for Starbright which is dedicated to Shorter.  It's an ethereal, winsome ballad that captures the mood. 
Apart from the rip-roaring tenor and the probing soprano moments, by the leader, Stanley proves to be as powerful a pianist as he is an organist (it doesn't always follow), bass and drums do some kicking when the boot needs putting in, making this an album to check out and, if your local jazz club has a date to be filled they could look no further
There's a tour afoot that begins in April (apart from a gig on January 26 in The Crypt of St. Giles Church in Camberwell).
Unfortunately, this tour, so far, doesn't go further north than Scarborough, Leeds or Manchester. Once again Newcastle has missed out but, the CD will go a long way to making up for it and the above venues aren't too far away to hear it live.
