(Review by Lance).
I usually treat ECM releases the way I do when an election leaflet comes through the door - I know that, whoever the artist or the party is, it ain't going to change my life.
The CDs I'm usually able to find a home for with some of my more liberally minded colleagues. Re the election leaflets - does the paper have to be so shiny?
However, there are times when one has to do a rethink. This Chris Potter CD is one that makes me realise that ECM isn't always left of field. In fact, if Tony Blair were a jazz musician this might be about where he'd be - no, Potter doesn't deserve that analogy!
Potter is a reedman who probes, searches, discovers and unleashes. Unleashes sax solos that swing in a contemporary manner. Forward looking, never dated - jazz for today with the use of samples and things that hint towards tomorrow.
Perhaps the most inventive, progressive, saxman playing today and doing it with a tenuous thread to the past.
Piano, bass and drums travel the same road with some interesting diversions by Virelles - maybe he called in at Jarrettville?
