This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Not Now Charlie - Nostalgia Revisited

Graduates of Sage Gateshead’s degree course, Not Now Charlie recorded Nostalgia Revisited at a gig in the upstairs room of the Jazz Café, Pink Lane, Newcastle. Nine tracks, written by Jamie Toms and mixed by bassist Liam Gaughan, showcase Toms’ flair for penning danceable, melodic tunes. The quintet’s cohesive, collective sound, recorded on the night by Mark Stafford, makes for a highly listenable album.
Tenor saxophonist Toms fronts the band, charting a melodic course and his four band mates clearly commit to enjoying themselves in the making of the music. The bulk of  several solo opportunities come the way of guitarist Pawel Jedrzejewski during which volume levels are commendably restrained with wah-wah and other effects deployed judiciously. The engine room boys nail the groove time and again. Gaughan and Dave McKeague (drums) are equally comfortable with a swing-time feel as they are with an energetic funk groove. McKeague’s groove brings it in on Hadath and It’s Not Me, It’s You; Gaughan dancing in and around all of the tunes, clearly enjoying himself. Richard Campbell’s keyboards anchor the compositions with Jedrzejewski the one given license to roam.
The self-effacing Toms takes a solo as and when, the group sound perhaps upper most in his thoughts. Nostalgia Revisited by Not Now Charlie, recorded on 12 February 2016 is available now. Visit: www.notnowcharlie.com
