Whilst perusing Colin Aitchison's
historical collection of Melody Makers in search of
Bebop Spoken There quotes I came across this item from the March 1927 issue which may be of interest to North-east readers:
Percy Bush [bandleader at Newcastle's Oxford Galleries] has recently enjoyed tremendous success as Conductor of Community Singing in conjunction with Newcastle United's home football matches.
Now Newcastle were the old First Division Champions that season [1926/27] so maybe they don't need a new manager but a new conductor!
John Wilson perhaps?
Lance.
PPS: Sunderland finished third and Middlesbrough were Division 2 champions - I wonder who their bandleaders were?
Meanwhile, down near the bottom of Divisions 2 and 3 (North) were Ashington, Darlington, Durham City, Hartlepools United and South Shields - presumably they didn't have an MD!
