RIP Johnny Keating.

Trombonist/arranger Johnny Keating died aged 87 on May 28. From being a trombonist/arranger with the Ted Heath Band he moved into the world of pop and film scoring. He achieved much recognition for his work with such entertainers such as Tony Bennett and Carmen McRae. He also combined with Johnny Worth AKA Les Vandyke to write Well I Ask You for sixties pop star Eden Kane. Johnny Worth, incidentally, is the father of bass guitarist Christos Worsley who was quite active on the local scene a few years back (HCW).
Keating also wrote Headin' North - a train song recorded by Heath and later by a small group of his own that is as good as any of the better known choo choo chunes and worthy of being shunted out of the sidings. He wrote and arranged many, many more...
These are just a few of the thoughts that crossed my mind on hearing the sad news.
He will be sadly missed.
