Stop This World. Its lunchtime and Mo Scott is singing.
Lots of people stopped what they were doing (finishing work early, forsaking a
Friday shopping ritual) to hear Mo sing the blues. Billie Holiday, Muddy
Waters, the Empress of the Blues Bewitched,
Bothered and Bewildered an adoring Lit & Phil crowd.
Fever, some Ellington – Don’t Get Around Much Anymore and Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me – and a stupendous take on Tell Me More and More and Then Some More.
Paul Edis and Neil Harland worked empathetically with Scott, bassist Harland a
long-time foil.
Edis’ piano playing dovetailed neatly with Scott’s vocal
delivery. As a working unit Scott has hit on something with this current
line-up. Our vocalist is singing better than ever and it is to be hoped that
this 2015 edition of the Mo Scott Trio hits the road with a number of gigs that
one could call a ‘tour’. Mercy! Mercy!
Mercy! – Scott can call a tune as it enters her head, and knowing that she
has top class musicians at her side, the result is never less than A*.Ketty
Lester’s Love Letters concluded a fine set of jazz and blues.
July’s concert features the Sue Ferris Trio. The
diminutive Ferris packs a punch on tenor and baritone saxophones and her flute
playing is second to none. Arrive early or you will have to stand at the back
of the room. Lit & Phil lunchtime gigs are popular. Put the date in your
diary – Friday 17 July, one o’clock start.
