Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ryan Quigley signs to Whirlwind Recordings

Press release from Whirlwind Recordings.
We are delighted to announce the new signing of Ryan Quigley, one of the premier trumpeters in the UK, known for his extremely rare ability to be both a world class lead player and virtuosic and conceptual improviser.  Ryan’s lead playing has been featured with the upper echelon of big bands, symphony orchestras and pop stars around the world and as a composer and small band leader he has won multiple awards in the UK including the Parliamentary Award for band of the year.
He has assembled a stellar line up for his new recording which will feature all new music to be recorded on 27 and 28 July at Steve Winwood’s private studio in the Cotswolds, produced by WWR’s own Michael Janisch.  Michael will also be holding down the bass duties alongside Paul Booth on saxophones, Steve Hamilton on piano and over from NYC will be one of the world’s great drummers Clarence Penn.  The album will be released in 2015.  They will be doing a short tour to play the music in before the recording.

23 July – Stereo, Glasgow
25 July – Urban Coffee Church StreetBirmingham
