This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ray Stubbs All-Stars @ The Schooner, Gateshead March 22.

I've been wanting to hear Ray Stubbs and his band for a long time but somehow whenever I heard of a gig in the area it was either too late or I couldn't go. So seeing on Friday on the BSH listings that they were appearing in a pub in Gateshead the next day, I resolved to make it this time.  I thought I had been in the Schooner once before many years ago so had a rough idea where it was and crossing the Tyne Bridge I turned left along the river bank and wandered through a post-industrial landscape of warehouses, office buildings and derelict sites. Fortunately there was clear sign indicating the pub and the sound of the All-Stars blasting out of the bar room was also a clue. The Schooner is in a great location, all on its own right on the riverbank, which is probably just as well on music nights.
Judging by the clothes and hairstyles, it seemed that this was a serious Blues audience (but very pleasant) and Ray and the band were in full swing. Ray's announcements were sporadic and of varying audibility but there were great versions of Muddy Waters I Want to be Loved followed by Sleepy John Estes You Don't Love me (not sure if the second song was a response to the first or not). The songs kept rolling out - some I recognised, Messing with the Kid, Hoochie Coochie Man, all with terrific singing and harp playing from Ray Stubbs and razor sharp guitar solos. A nice change of tone was a zydeco-influenced song with the keyboard player on accordion.
Towards the end of the session, Ray said he thought it was time for 'the cousin' to step up and sing and it was a nice surprise to see Mo Scott join the band. As fitted the occasion, Mo started at full throttle and carried on from there. Just one song but it was a blast. Great band, great pub and great night out.

Nice review JC. However, suggest for future reviews, you either go to Tesco or buy more at Asda. Incidentally, Mo is on at Jazz Café on Friday. To do her justice perhaps a visit to Marksy should be a prerequisite? Personally. I use 6 for a pound notepads from one of the 'Poundies'.
