This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz Café Jam Session Number 4. March 18.

Make Someone Happy played at Tempo Di Lick got the ball rolling and it certainly did roll as the house trio not only made the less than crowded room happy but also had them breathless! I Remember Clifford was a more sombre rendition as befitted Benny Golson's tribute to the late trumpet player killed almost 60 years ago. Bolivia brightened things up in anticipation of the jammers who were now queuing up in the wings.
Johnny Davis and Simon Stephenson Walked Tall - literally in the case of the former who, kitted out in woolly hat and black tenor sax blew some stirring solos. Stephenson, by some electronic wizardry produced a near acoustic sound from his Fender (Strat?). Georgia on my Mind with Davis to the fore hit a relaxed groove before it was back to Brand's Hatch for I Should Care.
Break time allowed Wight's southpaw kit to be re-set for Eric Stutt who, along with fellow Budtonians Stu and Fiona and James Harrison, joined up with Paul Grainger (no bassists in tonight) for an up tempo 12 bar.
Fi sang Blow Those Blues Away which Stu and James duly did.
Simon returned for God Bless the Child with Fi singing with much feeling.
Gilligan was back on the grid for Stella By Starlight - one fast lady. Night in Tunisia followed then Kathryn Lowdon gave us her unique interpretations of  Moanin' and Fine and Mellow.
Fresh from his recent tv appearance John Rowland rounded off my evening with There Will Never be Another You and In a Sentimental Mood.
Metro and number 88 bus took care of my journey home.
Back in two weeks. Next Tuesday (March 25) it's a Schmazz session  featuring Trio Riot.
