This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Playtime in Edinburgh

Jazz tourists from the Bebop Spoken Here constituency looking to pop over the border to Edinburgh for live music have another attraction to tempt them. The Playtime sessions began a regular Thursday series of adventures in new music at the Outhouse on March 22 and the response suggests that the team of musicians behind these informal presentations have found a winning recipe.
The ‘house band’ comprises four well-known players on the Scottish jazz scene – saxophonist Martin Kershaw, guitarist Graeme Stephen, bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Tom Bancroft – who are all familiar to Tyneside jazz audiences. Each musician brought new compositions to the first session, creating a variety of styles and moods from the pastoral to the funky, from romantic to free, urgent and swinging, and in the weeks ahead there will be chances to hear these new pieces again as well as more ‘world premieres’ and projects including Stephen’s soundtrack to the silent horror classic Nosferatu, which will be screened in situ.
In the Outhouse’s loft the musicians have a sympathetic venue with a warm atmosphere conducive to listening to their adventures. Situated in Broughton Street Lane, off the popular eating and drinking Broughton Street thoroughfare, the Outhouse is a ten-minute walk from Waverley Station and handy for bus links to the popular accommodation centres. The Outhouse also has a jazz history, with Barbara Morrison and Lillian Boutté among those who have staged performances there during the annual Fringe festival. All in all, it’s well worth the trip.
