Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

·  Fundraising (public and private sector)
·  Finance

Any musician joining the board would not be able to benefit from any Jazz North scheme or project. This position might suit an established artist or one who lives outside of the area.

We are looking for exceptional people with the profile, reputation and skills necessary to act as a powerful ambassador for Jazz North in any forum. A belief in the value of music and its creative community is essential; enthusiasm for jazz is desirable, though not essential.

This is a volunteer role; board members are not remunerated and are expected to commit to the time equivalent of about 5 days per year, including 4 board meetings a year plus occasional attendance at Jazz North events. Travel expenses can be paid. In addition, board members contribute to sub-committees which meet by phone/Skype at intervals throughout the year.

As a Jazz North board member you will:
·  Get involved in a highly creative and friendly environment
·  Contribute to the development of an organisation which plays a key role in the support and development the north’s jazz community and talent
·  Be part of an inspirational musical organisation delivering projects of the highest quality.
Jazz North is currently in receipt of ACE Strategic Funding of £190,000 pa, which runs until March 2015.

The Board of Directors is pivotal to the development of Jazz North as the organisation works towards securing charitable status and bidding to become an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) in April 2015.

We are looking for talented individuals to join our Board to help us steer the organisation towards these and other objectives.

We are also keen to encourage applicants from a range of age groups, cultures and backgrounds in order to add to the diversity of the Board.
