This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Message From Mike


Dear jazz fans: I thought I would send a timely reminder that clarinettist Gavin Lee brings his New Orleans Jazz to the Trinity Centre on Saturday November 17 at 7.30pm. It's always good to see a new band, and especially to encourage one led by one of our younger local musicians  Gavin tells me he will be paying tribute to legendary New Orleans reedmen past and present: included in the program will be compositions and music associated with Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Pete Fountain, Tim Laughlin, Larry Shields, Leon Rappolo, Jimmy Noone, Johnny Dodds, Omer Simeon, Irving Fazola and others.
The personnel is Gavin Lee (clarinet) Brian Chester (piano) Dan McKeown (banjo) Phil Smith (bass) and Bill Evans (drums): Gavin says that when he formed this band two years ago, the idea was to create a sound that was influenced by authentic New Orleans jazz without a copyist approach. The accent is on creativity rather than imitation - this is evident in their eclectic repertoire which ranges from traditional blues and ragtime tunes to a splash of the funky sounds of the modern-day street parade bands, linking their fresh improvisational approach with the rich, historical sounds of the 'Crescent City'.
Don't forget, if we want traditional jazz to continue at Trinity, we need to see good support for local bands as well as for visiting "superstars", otherwise the superstars simply won't be coming anymore; the last two concerts have both seen a disappointingly low audience turnout, so it would be nice to show the good folks at Trinity that the jazz programme is a viable proposition, both in November and for the Christmas extravaganza - the Rae Brothers and the WJRK with Caroline Irwin, two bands and a great singer for the price of one! - on Saturday December 15th.
