This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Neil C. Young Trio - 'El Camino'.

An album of originals by Neil C.Young - Nutter Strut written by Young, the drummer, is the only exception. The compositions are well within the comfort zone of most of our readers and contain some compelling themes. Strangely, several of them could easily have been written by our own north east guitar heroes Mark Williams and Lloyd Wright!

Young (the guitar) honed his craft with Gary Boyle and later with Fred T. Baker at Birmingham Conservatoire and has since toured Finland and the USA, received a couple of Grammy nominations, played in festivals around the world and reached number 2 in the Indian Album Charts - Neil's been around.
It shows in his playing. Funky, soulful and aware of the Benson, Schofield, Metheny school, Young may still be an under graduate at the BSMS but, not only will he soon be receiving his "diploma", he'll be on the Virtual Faculty alongside the other three!
Young, Richard, on drums does some shifty, nifty, thrifty chunky, funky, monkey drumming that lays it down exactly right. Nothing else would fit. Are the two Youngs brothers I wonder - they certainly belong in the same ballpark? And so does Whitham. Bass players, unless they're virtuosos, always get the short end of the stick but Whitham just shrugs and gets on with it. He knows, like most bass players, that they're indispensable  Unfortunately, club owners and band leaders don't always agree. I remember a club committee man once turning down my request that we add a bass player to the trio. "WTF for? They don't play tunes like proper fiddles!"
