This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. ACV @ The Bridge. Sunday Nov. 4

A brilliant session - who could say otherwise? This is The Cream of north-east contemporary jazz. Five guys at the top of their game - it would be difficult, if not impossible, to replace any of them.
The sets were based around their previously released album Fail in Wood.  One of the best ever albums made by a local band, tonight's live performances were perhaps the perfect examples of the band going for it - kicking ass - we are the champions (well at least one of them was) - it was tremendous.
Amazingly, Andy announced after each number that the band would probably never play these pieces again! Okay, so they've got a new CD coming out in the Spring but to discard this wonderful music so flippantly and - to not even have copies of the CD at hand to flog - makes me wonder at the marketing strategy of jazz people!
That said, and I'm sure there are deeper motives behind all this bizarreness, it was a terrific gig. Graeme blew baritone that reminded me of hearing John Surman for the first time. Mark, Paul and Andy were "merely, absolutely  superb" and Adrian - well, Adrian displayed just how tastefully you can kick seven shades out of a Gretsch kit - in fact I think AT may have kicked 8 plus!
But, if you guys don't intend to ever play these tunes again,, I'm just thankful that Bird and Beethoven, Monk and Mozart or Ellington and Elgar didn't choose to go down that road.
