Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Triple Treat Today. Lindsay Hannon and Two Hannahs

Hannah and the Narrators: Hannah Rickard - Vocals Tim Bloomer - Guitar David Cantlay - Bass Dominic Snaith - Keyboard Robbie Houston - Drums.
Acting on an impulse I hopped off the number 27 as it passed the Central Bar and caught and earful of Hannah and her Narrators which turned out to be a good call. Hannah hollers handsomely. Moondance, Love Me or Leave Me, My Baby Just Cares For Me and Stormy Monday were the numbers I heard. Guitar and keyboard played excellent solos the latter is a two handed player although, strangely, he rarely uses them together! Nevertheless it was effective.. They'll be rockin' Hoochie                                    on Thursday.
-----
Over to the Jazz Café for a superb set from Lindsay Hannon (vcl); Alan Law (pno); Paul Grainger (bs) and "James from California" (dms).
Lindsay was in good voice - isn't she always? - delighting the intimate audience with They Can't Take That Away From Me, Let's Fall in Love, Blue Hotel Room, That Old Feeling and Nature Boy. Alan on piano soloed and supported superbly with Paul and James, a young Californian who'd just wandered in, keeping it all together.
-----
Chameleon: Stuart Johnson (ten/sop); Gary Boyle (gtr); Avril Greenhow Parker (keys); Dave Turner (bs/bs gtr); Tim Franks (dms); Hannah Fuller (vcl).
Today's Splinter @ The Bridge featured Jazz/Rock/Fusion straight out of the 1970's - think Nucleus, Paraphernalia, Dick Heckstall-Smith and you get the picture. However, this was no time-warp situ Chameleon have planted their past very firmly into today. Johnson - surely the world's tallest tenor - unleashes sheets of sound that  create almost unbearable tension whilst Boyle releases it with some quite lyrical playing. A surprise second set guest was vocalist Hannah Fuller - two Hannahs in one day! - who sang Street Life. The Crusaders' number fit in well with the style of the band and I'd liked to have heard more but the legendary number 27 bus was due...
Next week ACV.
Lance.
