Dave Weisser's weekly workshop session continues to unearth and develop new talent. Guitarist Daniel Tyson walked in a few weeks ago hoping to sit in and Weisser, as ever, gave him a warm welcome. This week Tyson, who just happens to live around the corner, arrived with his Ibanez keen to read the dots. Perched alongside veteran piano man Barrie Ascroft he comped and comped some more - perhaps next week he'll pluck-up the courage and take a solo. Bassist Ivan Scutt and drummer Rob Bates appear to have the tunes down pat and tenorist Dougie Fielder kept calling the tunes both mainstream and bop. Fielder played effective soprano and Gaby Heller joined the band to sing a few numbers including an excellent Lover Man.

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!)
