This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Maurice Summerfield on Alyn Shipton

Bebop Spoken Here contributor, Guitar Guru and author of the definitive biography of Barney Kessel, Maurice Summerfield, was interviewed by Alyn Shipton on the BBC Jazz Library radio program yesterday afternoon. Maurice discusses Barney's work as an innovator, his backing to Julie London on the Julie is Her Name album (tracks played Easy Street and S'wonderful), a trio recording with Sonny Rollins (How High The Moon) as well as some general info on Barney's early days.
Maurice's section of the program starts about 25 minutes in.

Another fine example of Barney's accompanying skills is on the 4 concert tracks Kay Starr recorded at a Gene Norman Just Jazz concert.There are some wonderful guitar lines behind the vocal.
Good For Nothing Joe being a particularly good track.
