This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz Café Jam Session

Lyndsay Hannon, Fiona Littlewood (vcl), Elaine Binney (vln), Sarah Trevena, Stuart Findon (ten), Don Forbes (tpt), Peter Gilligan, Alan Laws (pno), Ryan ? (bs), Matthew Office (bs/gtr) etc. Such is the nature of jam sessions that the only thing predictable about them is the unpredictable and this afternoon was no exception!
Last week the drummers were queing up to play - this week the queue evaperated as there was no kit! However, last week's hero Ryan instead of playing 'air drums' played double bass and, despite a reported unfamiliarity with the instrument made a decent fist of it. Having said that, with the apocalyptic Pete on keys, who needs drums? The guy is a rhythm section in himself. He took Anthropology on an up-tempo ride that hit the deck running and didn't stop until just about every permutation of rhythm changes had been exhausted and then some. In the midst of it all Don Forbes had a few tasty choruses.
Lindsay Hannon did Willow Weep For Me and Deed I Do - among others. The girl has got the vocal chops to justify her standing as jazz vocal coach at The Sage. Nice one Lyndsay.
Also on the vocal front, sax player Fiona did some nice voice work on You Go To My Head, The Jody Grind, Four and Quiet Nights. Fellow Budvivarian Stu blew tenor and Alan Laws went on to piano. Pete may have played bass guitar around this time.
Sarah Trevana, as she did last week, played fine tenor and was joined by the Grappellic Elaine Binney who fiddled her way delightfully through Ain't Misbehavin' and Don't Explain.
As I left for the Bridge (me and Sonny Rollins) the place was filling up and I guess I missed a few more gems. Great day in Pink Lane. Photos. Lance
