Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark (Portugal) - even Ophelia has gone for an early bath nevertheless...

Jim McBriarty (clt.sop/vcl), Herbie Hudson (tmb/hca/vcl), Malcolm Armstrong (pno), Alan Rudd (bs), Mike Humble (dms).
...Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in the form of Herbie and Jim ensured there was no retreat - backed up as they were by Polonius, Horatio and Laertes - they held strong and there was, forsooth, many a roundelay from R and G to caress the ear drums.
This was a different Thursday afternoon at Rosie Malone's, South Shields and very much a Back to the Delta day.
To compensate for Ray Harley's absence, Jimmy Mack's soprano playing added a different dimension. Nice one Jim - Honeysuckle Rose ne'er did give such pleasing odour.
Equally Sweet was Lorraine. I just love the changes on that song - it's one of those tunes where the harmony is better than the melody! (Well that's what I think!) Herbie blew some nice harp on this one Rumour had it that Olive was babysitting - I didn't even know she was preggers! As for Ray, one can only assume that the ever increasing workload of the Maine Street Jazzmen is taking its toll - I think they are free between 4 and 5am on January 27, 2014.
Despite the above, it was still an enjoyable session
