Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Gilad Atzmon Workshop - The Primacy of The Ear (Part 2)

This was a hugely rewarding and fascinating experience. Distilling down huge knowledge and experience Gilad kept the whole thing simple, relevant and disarmingly honest. That honesty tended to focus on we instrumentalists who demonstrated some degree of disconnection between ears and instrument.
The answer?
Singing of course!
Now most jazz pedagogues (Jamie Aebersold and just about all others you might think of) recommend this, but Gilad demonstrated with amazing fluency and style, dividing scales and patterns between voice and alto sax. And in our impromptu instrumental groups his playing confirmed the benefits with astonishingly accurate replication of themes and patterns and answering phrases. He even got me singing - a belated apology to the other group members for my rendition of "Well you Needn't."
Above all else Gilad is an engaging personality with a highly positive direct teaching style and a wicked sense of humour. Even without the playing experience I would have turned up just to sit and hear him talk for and hour or two. Let's hope we can get him back here again soon - don't miss it if it happens. This is the sort of opportunity which really ought to be a part of the Sage Jazz Festival.
