Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Musicians Turn Out In Force To Pay Their Respects to Marshall

Pleased to see so many familiar faces at the Crem. for Marshall Walker's funeral. I'll say this for the jazz world, they are united when it comes to saying goodbye to their own.
Tubby Hayes' "There Will Never Be Another You" played the mourners in and Sting's "Every Breath You Take" played them out
Afterwards at the Ravensworth Arms there was also a good turnout and I only regret that circumstances decreed I couldn't stay long enough to exchange reminiscences with those present.
RIP.
Lance.

Hello Lance
Thanks (on behalf of all the local jazz fratenity I'm sure) for giving a very nice, heartfelt eulogy which encapsulated Marshall's love of and career in jazz, his dry humour etc.

Thanks Roly, it was nervewracking but, ultimately, satisfying. You know what it's like having done it for Clem (Avery)- the appreciation shown by family and friends afterwards makes you feel glad that you did it.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their kind words and support which helped make yesterdays funeral of our father, Marshall bearable. We know that Marshall would have been very proud of the day and of his musician friends (pals). We would like to say a very special thank you to Lance and Brian for their help in choosing the correct 'Jazz' number and for the speech which was written and read so well. The memories that were shared helped lift the mood on the day. This Bebop web site is an excellent idea and Marshall would have loved reading all the posts that are on it. Take care and keep enjoying your music Andrew and Louise Walker.
