This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Barry Galbraith by Roly

Barry Galbraith was regarded as one of the all time great jazz guitarists and THE studio session player in NY during the 50s & 60s. He was also a profoundly important teacher and influenced many of the guitarists who had moved to NY and who sought him out for help and guidance. His reputation was second to none. Small world. I picked up a Gil Evans compilation album the other day. It included 3 tracks by a lady called Marcy Lutes whom I'd never heard of but who sang "Cheek to Cheek", "Aren't You Glad You're You" and "Travelin' Light" rather well.
I decided to find out more and discovered the three tracks were from her only album which was recorded in 1957 - a year after she got divorced from .... Barry Galbraith.
What happened to her afterwards is a mystery which is a shame as one reviewer described her voice as "Think Annie Ross & Doris Day". I can think along those lines any time!
