After not hearing any live jazz for a while I was looking forward to a night at the Moor Club where reeds maestro Munch Manship had assembled a group of first class local musicians to play an interesting selection of his favourite tunes.
He opened the first set with an uptempo the Best Things in Life Are Free and this number had all players in a high-energy, creative mode. This sounded so good that I thought it would be hard to maintain this standard throughout the evening but I was proven wrong as there were more highspots to follow..
Given plenty of space for solos was the great Richard Wetherall, who I never get tired of listening to. It was also good to hear Dave Lynane playing such a major role - he was on top form tonight with every note being clear as a bell. Munch featured flute as well as tenor sax in the second set and he gained the most applause when he played a very fast version of Tico Tico - a tune that I last heard him play on piccolo.
The closing tune was that classic This I Dig of You from the album Soul Station by Hank Mobley. This version featured some explosive drumwork from Dave Hassell and made a perfect ending to a memorable night of modern jazz. Mike Farmer
