This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ed Kainyek Quartet w. Trish Heenan @ the Moor Club, Heaton Moor, Stockport - Feb. 9

Ed was a frequent performer at the Railway pub until its closure. However, I'm pleased to say that the Moor Club seems to be attracting former Railway fans plus a few new visitors.

Ed has added a singer to his line-up as he did on his previous visit. Tonight it was Trish Heenan who was making her first appearance at this venue. 

Often seen on Ed's gigs is drummer Tim Franks and from where I was sitting he did a great job using both brushes and sticks particularly when backing Trish who was featured on every tune apart from the first number of both sets.

The concert started at 8:00pm with Ed playing soprano on A Pint of Bitter, a Clark Terry tune that Tubby Hayes recorded with Terry in New York. He also played soprano on the second set opening with that popular standard On the Sunny Side of the Street which everyone seems to play these days.  

Most of the songs that Trish sung were new to me with the exception of September in the Rain, Save Your Love For Me, and Devil May Care. Save Your Love For Me was given a slow tempo vibe, much different to the version by Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis on their LP Tough Tenors. 

I meant to have a chat with Ed after the gig which ended at 10:00pm but I had to catch a cab so didn't get a chance to ask for info about the singer who went down very well with the audience. I had a look on the internet but there wasn't much to see although there was mention of her working with bands in London and spending some time in LA.

George King sounded good along with John Sandham who I was pleased to see at the Moor Club, so many great bass players now in this area.   

Next Sunday's gig at the Moor Club on the Feb. 16 features the Carole Williams/Helen Pillinger Counterpoint Quintet. Mike Farmer
