Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

KSTV: Another fine trio session tonight - March 24

(Screenshot by Lance)
Noah Stoneman (piano); Daisy George (bass); Will Cleasby (drums).

The news wasn't all good tonight. As of April, Smitty's will be streaming on Saturday nights only. Still, I suppose it was inevitable. However, let's not cry over spilled beer until it's actually ruined the carpet. There have been some great sessions and I'm sure that even though the quantity will have been slimmed down the quality will remain at the level to which we are accustomed to.

Like last night, this was a night where the musicians just relaxed and let it all hang out (figuratively speaking).

On sessions like these I close my eyes and imagine I'm in NYC, back in the day, and listening to Marian McPartland at The Hickory House or, say, Joe Bushkin at The Embers. Tonight's music met with the mood and at the end I almost went outside to hail a yellow cab.

Three of the best London jazzers played some great stuff - Cole Porter to Coltrane, Georgia to Johannesburg. That's the beauty of today's young musicians, they respect the past whilst looking towards the future.

(Screenshot by Lance)
Wayne Shorter's Edda; Georgia on my Mind; Night and Day; Abdullah Ibrahim's beautiful composition The Mountain;  Kenny Garrett's Wayne's Thang (don't ask!); Trane's Central Park West and a tune I knew but couldn't put a lid on. It had Cleasby working out on it like a man possessed - possessed of great talent that is. He's on the shortlist for the next jazz polling day. Come to think about it, all three are likely candidates.

When lockdown ends and the venues open we will probably look back and think of how nice it was just to enjoy live music at home without going out in the rain, missing buses and getting accosted by loose women - although, on second thoughts ...
