Bebop Spoken There

Emma Rawicz: "In a couple of years I've gone from being a normal university student to suddenly being on international stages." DownBeat January 2026.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ali Affleck, Brian Kellock & Enrico Tomasso live streaming from the Aberdeen Jazz Festival - Mar. 28

This year's Aberdeen Jazz Festival, in common with many other events, was an online affair. Four days of concert performances by the likes of Mike Stern and Tommy Smith culminated in a first on-stage meeting of Alison 'Ali' Affleck, Brian Kellock and Rico Tomasso. The Blue Lamp's spacious stage afforded vocalist Affleck the opportunity to sing several numbers, some familiar, some less so, flanked by the socially distanced pianist Brian Kellock and the similarly socially distanced trumpeter Rico Tomasso.

Exactly Like You opened the show. Would it take a while for Tomasso to get his lip in? Twelve months of once-a-week live streaming can't be the same as turning up for a real live gig with the expectation that he should hit the ground running. During the year our Louis Armstrong devotee had spoken of his midweek practice regime designed to make his Friday evening sessions a success. Here in Aberdeen our man proved he was up to the job.

Affleck sang without inhibition, Just a Closer Walk with Thee an unexpected choice, My Sweet Hunk o' Trash an excellent choice, sharing the vocals with Tomasso. And, best of all, Got a Man in the 'Bama Mines. All the while Kellock played suberb piano, some of it of the dynamite variety! Affleck momentarily left the stage to Kellock and Tomasso to play Jubilee with a knockout solo courtesy of Mr B. Kellock. The trio's set benefitted from a high quality audio-visual stream and Ms Affleck and Messrs Kellock and Tomasso went out on My Life Will be Sweeter Some Day. A song for our times...
