This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. FREE online Q&A with multi award-winning Soweto Kinch

Festival co-founders Empty Shop are delivering some life-after-covid think pieces and online Q&A events. The next session is with 2017 DJAZZ headliner and multi award-winning saxophonist, Soweto Kinch.

The series takes a look at a different segment of culture and invites experts to write a guest blog post and take part in an online talk/Q&A.

For the session on music, the invited expert is award-winning saxophonist, composer, poet, MC and producer and festival organiser, Soweto Kinch.

In his vital think-piece, Soweto discusses how his latest album, The Black Peril, confronts some of the injustices and inequalities under the ‘old normal’ and how he is using the restricted conditions of lockdown to create new work, and find new audiences.

His article is hugely relevant and comes at a really important time - digging into the dynamics of class and culture and race and heritage, all set against the backdrop of touring a new album during the coronavrius pandemic and at the start of the single largest wave of anti-racist protests.
The online event is a follow up to this piece of writing and takes place on Wednesday 15th July at 7pm. It's free to attend but registration required.
