This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gerry Richardson Soul Jazz Quartet @ Hoochie Coochie - May 9

A decent turnout - perhaps they were expecting an impromptu appearance from Sting as once happened at a previous Hoochie gig by Gerry - not tonight though, no doubt he had more pressing matters elsewhere - what they did get was Gerry's tried and tested routine, a routine that never fails.

We'd heard it all before but, as with many great players, it always seems to sound like the first time. Gerry uses a Crumar Mojo which offers more portability than the B3 and, to my ears, the sound is comparable although one observer did remark that he missed the Leslie speaker. Whatever, Gerry handles the tools at hand with much aplomb - I say 'at hand' but his feet dance like Fred Astaire on the pedal board. Unlike so many, he is the complete package - bass players are redundant in this outfit.

Rod Sinclair performs moments of magic on his trusty Telecaster, blues-drenched riffs fill the room with joy and the hearts of aspiring guitarists with despair. On alto, Garry Linsley gives us an indication of what Charlie Parker might have sounded like playing in a soul band whilst, on drums, Graeme Hare, a new (to me) drummer did the job and worked out on African Sunset.
