This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Matt MacKellar Band - Jan 10

One week tonight (Thursday 10) there is only one place to be and that's the Black Swan Bar in Newcastle Arts Centre. The debut gig by the Matt MacKellar Band is set to be an 'I was there' occasion. 

Drummer Matt MacKellar is home on a short break from his studies at Berklee, Boston, Mass. Last week, as a key member of the Francis Tulip Quartet, Matt played a hugely successful gig at Newcastle Jazz Co-op's Railway Street premises. The Globe was heaving and next week a similarly large crowd is expected at the Westgate Road basement venue. 

The Matt MacKellar Band is a new project reworking neo-soul cuts with a tip-of-the-hat to million-selling Floetry and current favourites like Robert Glasper. Sharing the stand with Matt will be friend, pianist Ben Lawrence, himself enjoying a winter break from his studies (Mathematics!) at Durham University, and virtuoso bassist Andy Champion. Add a vocal dimension - the dynamic Niffi Osiyemi - to the mix and you have the makings of an intriguing evening of soul, jazz, hip-hop, r & b and more. 

If next Thursday (January 10) is your first gig of 2019 it's sure to set the standard. Arrive early to claim a seat, it's an eight o’clock start. £6 on the door (£4 concessions). Remember, in years to come you'll be able to say: I-was-there!
