This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Florian Weber – Lucent Nights

German-born Weber’s second release for ECM. A thoughtful contemplative piece of work, the classically trained pianist/composer has assembled a superb quartet where each member seems to fit in perfectly with the mood and pace of the leader's compositions.

Beginning with a haunting solo piano piece, Brilliant Waters, much of the playing has a dreamy floaty feel to it. However, towards the end of the album, things liven up a bit with Time Horizon and Fragile Cocoon. Just in case we were about to throw caution to the wind the album concludes with a Satie like piece Schimmelreiter. 


Alessi is used sparingly, appearing on only half of the tracks. On From Cousteau’s Point of  View and Butterfly Effect, he has a lovely crisp piecing sound.  

Ho’s double bass playing is ever so subtle her solos have a habit of catching one’s attention both unexpectedly and rewardingly. Waits is simply a master drummer who seems to perfectly emphasise the mood swings of the music. Not an album that will have you tapping and singing along to in the living room but it has a gentle and calming quality which, when in the right mood, will provide a warm and comforting listen.
